ABSTRACT

T34C is the first airplane for R.O.C. Air Force Academy cadet pilots’ training flights. During the flying training, hard landing is always considered the most affecting factor to the aviation safety for cadet pilots. Through 6 different case studies, literature reviews and expert interviews, current research analyzes the root causes of hard landing from questionnaires and provides a prevention strategy derived from expert interviews of senior trainers to reduce its occurrence. Prevention strategies are discussed as following categories: excessive operation; late flare, and early nose gear touchdown. The probable causes for airplane porpoise is due to shallow flat of configuration, early release stick after landing, late flare, and excess approaching speed at landing. Questionnaires were emailed to those cadet pilots, and analyzed results indicate that 78% of cadet pilots had correct concepts when encountered hard landing conditions which are of great safety concerns. Two recommendations against T-34C hard landing were proposed. First, the prevention strategy against hard landing is to land the airplane at targeted landing zone under proposed landing speed, to maintain zero descending rate when approaching at landing zone, to keep flying path parallel to runway centerline, and prepare to go-around immediately if there were any doubt or uncontrolled aircraft configuration conditions. Second, the pilot should initiate go-around procedure immediately when airplane is porpoising during touchdown stage.
